Student Dialogue

The Faculty of Arts and Letters Student Council (ABSC) and the administration of answered and explained in the former Rizal Auditorium last Tuesday the inquiries of the students, specifically the 50 thousand peso budget that got "lost" last semester.

The Face to Face discussion forum was attended by Assistant Dean Narcisa Tabirara, Assistant Professor Ma. Zenia Rodriguez, Professor Lino Baron, the members of the ABSC, the Board of Majors, and some students of the Faculty of Arts and Letters.

The issues addressed during the forum were the missing 50-thousand pesos--including its effects upon the persons involved and the actions taken by authorities to investigate the crime--as well as other inquiries of the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) student community, such as the tuition increase, projects of the student council, holding classes at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building, and the students' disquiet regarding their professors.

"I think the students really had a lot of concerns regarding the student council, so I think it was a good chance for the students to have been able to ask the student council about their concerns...particularly [it seems to be focused] on the 50 thousand peso missing money...It [holding forums] really helps [the student' and the administration's relationship]. There are certain things that we may not be aware of, so knowing these concerns, then we can always make the necessary adjustments...[and] provisions...When things are brought to light, then you can respond to them," said Tabirara.

The ABSC facilitated the event "to give the students the opportunity" to ask their questions, especially about the 50 thousand peso budget that was found missing in the student council office in October 23, 2014, and the investigation and privately-held hearings to be conducted on the matter, as well as the Type B uniform which was planned to be implemented this February in order for the students to have something to wear for the coming summer months included in the academic year.

"They focused too much on the 50K," agreed Ma. Ysabella Juachon, a second year AB student who also attended the forum last Tuesday.

"When we arrived, there were already so many people. There were no more seats available...There were already people who were standing, so obviously, there were no more space for us because the venue was cramped. It was not really conducive for a forum, specially for important issues like the missing 50K and the new Type B uniform...They should have prepared a more appropriate venue," recounted Juachon.

The former Rizal auditorium was made up of several rooms whose walls can be adjusted and set aside to turn all the rooms into a single hall. All the rooms were occupied in order to accommodate the audience. The students seated on the farthest room experienced high temperatures, they were "overcrowded" and they "could not hear the dialogs well" because the speakers were at a low volume. Juachon said that they could not understand what the topic already was and what they were "fighting for."
